It’s not necessarily the dark that I’m afraid of, but more what I can’t see there. When I’m alone at night in a dark room suddenly a silhouette can become a sinister being and there can appear a menacing presence lurking where I can’t see it, ready to reach out and grab me. Sometimes life can be the same way. Most of the time we can’t foresee what our future holds and the unseen can breed fear, making us feel like there’s a dark, menacing presence waiting for us around the corner. Isn’t it a pity that at times like this we often forget about the Light we have available to us? After all, God’s the strongest flashlight there is.
The Flame that Lights the Way
We, as mere humans, are not omniscient; we don’t and can’t know everything, especially when it comes to the future. However, God does. He knows everything—past, present, and future. What’s more, he has walked ahead and planned our steps before us. We may be alone in a desolate expanse of snow and ice, but we have a trail laid out for us. All we have to do is follow in His footprints like a child after their father. God knows what lies ahead of us, every hill, valley, curve, and fork in the road. At times we may be travelling blind in the darkness, but, if we’re following the Lord, we have the benefit of His light leading the way for us like it did for the Israelites so many years ago.
“Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night: the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, didn’t depart from before the people.” Exodus 13:21-22
Even if we’re lost in the desert in the black of night, we can still keep going, following The Light of the World, The Flame that Lights the Way.
He has Plans for Us
Sometimes it may be hard to keep walking, not knowing where we’re going, not being able to see down the road; it requires a little thing called faith.
“Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1
And the Bible assures us that our faith is well-placed.
“A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
When we can’t see our way clear through the darkness, let us remember to trust God and commit our lives and our future to Him.
“Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed.” Proverbs 16:3
“Commit your way to Yahweh. Trust also in him, and he will do this: he will make your righteousness go out as the light, and your justice as the noon day sun.” Psalm 37:5-6
Dear Lord, when we feel lost in the night,
Scared and afraid of the dark,
Guide us from the moment we embark,
Fill us with peace and show us Your light.
“Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
