Samson is universally identified with strength. You think of Samson and you likely think of a strong guy with bulging muscles, long hair, and a loin cloth. Samson was so strong he was able to kill a lion with his bare hands. That’s pretty strong, but Samson wasn’t strong by his own strength. He got his strength from God. He was a Nazirite and the deal was that his head was not to be shaved. If it was, he’d lose his strength.
Samson remained strong with the strength of the Lord until he gave in to the manipulating machinations of the lovely, double-dealing Delilah. He told her the secret of his strength and his head was shaved. He lost his strength and was taken prisoner by the Philistines.
In the same way, when we turn away from God, we lose our strength from Him. We become weak and vulnerable to the power of Satan. However, if we remain in the Lord, following Him, the Devil can’t take us prisoner.
Bringing the House Down
Samson’s hair began to grow back after it was shaved and even after the Philistines had put out his eyes, put him in prison, and then brought him out like some kind of trained monkey to perform for them, Samson called on God and literally brought down the house, killing the people inside.
Even if we mess up from time to time, we only have to ask forgiveness and return to the Lord in order to regain our strength and the power to knock down Satan’s strongholds. In the interim we may have suffered greatly because of our sinfulness, but God is still there waiting for us, ready to forgive, comfort, and strengthen us when we, like the prodigal son, return to Him.
He Who Goes With You
When we remain in the Lord and follow Him, we can be strong and unafraid of Satan’s scheming.
When the Israelites were to go to battle, the priest was supposed to speak to them and say to them:
“‘Hear, Israel, you draw near today to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’” Deuteronomy 20:3-4
When we remain in the Lord, we have unbounded strength from God and we can rest assured that He is our God who will go with us, to fight for us against our enemies, to save us.
We may be surrounded by all the armies of the world and Satan, but, by the strength of God, we can stand against them and defeat them.
“I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
If we were to rely on our own strength, we would be in grave danger of being utterly defeated and taken prisoner just as Samson was. However, through God’s strength, we can do the impossible and arise victorious.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.” Ephesians 6:10
Dear Lord, let us remain in You
And be strong in Your strength all along.
Fight for us and be the One who
Will go with us and keep us strong.
“Yahweh is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower. I call on Yahweh, who is worthy to be praised; and I am saved from my enemies.” Psalm 18:2-3
